Charles I. Overbey Sr. passed away peacefully in Auburn, Alabama on June 12, 2019 at the age of 95.

Charles was a native of Calvert City, Kentucky. He was son to the late Gideon and LaNora Overbey. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Betty Bryan Overbey; daughter, Susan Overbey and son, Richard Overbey of Calvert City, Kentucky.

Charles devoted his life to his country, family and community. He served in World War II from 1943 -1946 aboard the USS Hancock as a 1st Class Fire Controlman during the Pacific campaign. After seven years of service, Charles was a highly decorated veteran and kamikaze survivor.

He later earned his degree in chemical engineering from Murray State University and retired from Pennwalt Corp. in Calvert City, Kentucky. Charles remained as an active member with the Kentucky Lake Power Squadron, the USS Hancock CV/CVA-19 Association, and Christ Chapel at Sound Retreat Farm in Fairdealing, Kentucky.

He is survived by his son, Charles (Chuck) Overbey of Louisville, Kentucky; two daughters, Carol Collins of Louisville, Kentucky; Kay Ennis of Auburn, Alabama; 8 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

Visitation followed by memorial service is scheduled for Friday, June 14, 2019 at 2 p.m. CST in the chapel of Frederick-Dean Funeral Home located at 1801 Frederick Road in Opelika, Alabama. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests donations to the Wounded Warrior Project.
