He is preceded in death by his parents; father, William McKinley Abercrombie; mother, Hazel Abercrombie; brothers, Billy Joe Abercrombie, William McKinley Abercrombie, Jr.; and oldest son, Johnny Ray Abercrombie. If anyone knew or was around Ray Abercrombie, he was man of many things over the years he lived. As a young boy or man, he worked hard around the farm for his father, along with cutting and hauling pulp wood with the Bailey brothers from Chambers County. After he graduated high school from Miltown, AL in 1961, he entered the Alabama National Guard where he was trained as field artillery specialist and served six years. After marrying his wife Jean, he moved to Dadeville where he lived the rest of his life. Ray went to work for the United States Postal service in 1969 where he worked for 30+ years before retiring. Ray always worked multiple jobs over the years of his life which included being a police officer, hauling pulpwood, doing box blade work, along with plowing garden spots with his farm tractor. Ray also had several rental properties. He enjoyed buying and remodeling them. I would say that Ray’s hobby was working, but he also enjoyed going to local auctions and getting around to listen to local artists when they would have a picking or making music. An interesting fact about Ray is that in the early 70’s, he obtained his pilot licenses and enjoyed flying airplanes.
